is it illegal to register a domain that is very similiar to another company's? for example, say i see microsoft.us is available, am i allowed to register that domain? any intellectual property violation, or should Microsoft just cover every available domain if they don't want anyone else using it?

Since Microsoft is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation, you'd be in violation of the trademark laws. You'd get totally screwed if you tried that. On the other hand, if you notice a company's domain where the name isn't trademarked, go for it
