Domain names are no longer a web address these days. Many profitable companies have been built around their domain name making it the brand and the company. Choosing the right domain should be as important as naming your product. Given that status, here are some pointers how to find a name that will see you through it all.

Branding vs. Keywords

This is probably the most difficult to determine. Yet, should be the first place to start because the rest of the considerations will one way or another relate to this. There are two schools of thought. One group believes you should have your keywords in the domain so that search engines pick up on the keywords and rank you better. To what extent this really affects your search engine ranking is not clearly known or proven. Consider why you are putting the website up in the first place. Most likely it’s for your customers or visitors. So choose a domain that also puts your audience first.

The other group believes a webmaster should go for brand. Most successful companies start off with a brand, including online companies. Brands make the product memorable, create differentiation and encourage loyalty. In the early days of the Internet, everyone wanted a generic domain like searchengine.com, books.com, auctions.com and the likes. Today, very few of those are truly successful sites that rival Google, Amazon and eBay.

A branded domain also ensures consistency throughout your marketing efforts. As one web user describes, “Every time the company tells me to visit their generic website, they lose the opportunity to reinforce their brand name in my mind”.

Whether you use keywords or brand for your domain depends much on what you aim to do. If you plan to build a business or website that is going to have staying power, branded domains are a better choice. It might not be easy or cheap to build a brand but there are no shortcuts when it comes to branding either. It’s a slow process that can be very rewarding if done right. Don’t choose a domain simply because of its keywords. First class content, links in and clever optimization are more important to good ranking than anything else. If you are building a resource website, a website for affiliate programs or one that’s temporary in nature, keyword rich and generic domains would be a better choice. Finally, there is no harm in buying both branded and keyword domains that point to the same site. Just make sure you only use one for submissions, directory listings, link exchanges and promotion. This way you build your link popularity.

You should also, make sure the site title or name matches your domain. If your domain is ExtremeBiking.com and your site name is Smith Brothers Biking Tours this makes visitors and directory editors wonder if this is the correct website. It also causes confusion. People who know you tend to look for a domain that reflects your brand and not extreme biking. If you have yet to establish a company name or a site name, it might be a good idea to name it after you find a domain name. This is sensible, consistent marketing.

Company Name

This is the most common because in today’s increasingly small and competitive world, businesses tend to have rather creative and catchy names. On the other hand, if your business name is very nondescript such as The Smith Brothers, you might want to take the approach that combines part of your company name and a keyword. Although the importance of brand name was emphasized earlier, here the situation is slightly different. Non-descriptive company names aren’t particularly helpful to audiences. Someone looking for you would find it difficult to differentiate your company and the other company with a similar name. In this case, keywords tied to your name are worth considering.

Domain Length

Short domains are supposed to be best but it’s increasingly difficult to find one without paying someone a lot of money to take over the domain. There are alternatives though, such as expired domains which we will explore a little later on.

Just because a domain is a little longer doesn’t make it bad. For example, TrashToTreasure.com is meaningful, to the point and memorable even though it is rather long. On the other hand, ThisIsAnExampleOfAVeryLongDomain.com is too long, difficult to remember and prone to errors. The other extreme is needless abbreviation. TTT.com is meaningless because TrashToTreasure.com works much butter. Aim for some balance while taking into account ease of use.

.Com, .Net, .Info

Most people will agree a .com is best. A web user told us, “Whenever I can’t remember the domain name but I know the site name, brand or company, I’ll try for a .com first”. If you have no good .com alternative, start with .net and .org first. Also, be sure to consistently promote your website as a .net or .org whatever you may choose.

Hyphens, Suffixes and Prefixes

Hyphens aren’t necessarily evil especially if it’s in your brand name or is the correct way to write a word. However, they are difficult to remember, type and prone to user input mistakes. Avoid them as much as you can.

Suffixes and prefixes are i’s, e’s, the’s and numbers usually suggested by domain search tools when your desired domain is unavailable. If you choose such a domain, be very consistent in your promotion. Promote the domain as a whole, do not leave out the suffix or prefix. You might also want to avoid domains with very little difference between them. These are usually between plurals and singulars. Aim for singular names whenever possible. For example, petfood.com and petfoods.com; If petfood.com is taken, resist the temptation to opt for petfoods.com because people tend to leave out the ‘s’.

Can You Say It?

This isn’t always a top consideration but it makes sense you should have a domain name that can be verbally communicated. Take your list of chosen domains and tell it to someone. Does it confuse them? Do you find yourself having to constantly repeat it or spell it? If that is so, move on or go back to the drawing board.

Copyrights and Trademarks

In this day and age, many companies particularly those with strong brand names are increasingly protective of their trademarks. Avoid the trouble and expense of a lawsuit by spending some time to research your chosen name. Start by looking up the name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (http://www.uspto.gov/) and your state’s trademark database. Expiring Domains

Anyone who has looked for a domain name finds out soon enough more than half the desired names are taken. If you cannot find a suitable one despite numerous searches, why not explore expired domains? Expired domains are those whose original registrant fails to renew commonly are due to website closings or companies going out of business. Within the list of expired domains are some real gems. There are many services that allow you to monitor expired and soon to expire domains for a fee. Before you sign up for them, a good place to start researching for free is DeletedDomains.com (http://www.deleteddomains.com).

Some believe recently expired domains with good traffic and rankings allow you to benefit from someone else’s hard work and give your site a head start. Theoretically, that may be true. Realistically, you shouldn’t expect that to last. People consistently return to a website for a reason. If your topic is very different from the original site, visitors will stop coming back because the information or resource they previously had access to is no longer there. If you assume such a domain and want to convert as many visitors as possible, make sure your content is very closely related or similar to that of the old site. You might want to also check that the old site has completely ceased operations. If the previous site still exists under a different domain, loyalists eventually find their way back there; Word gets around among them and could create a negative image on the old domain that’s now yours.

Ownership

When you do register as domain, have it registered under your name or your company. If you are registering through your host, remember a lot can happen within a short space of time. Companies go out of business or you change hosts, scams, scandals and more. Making sure you own the domain reduces the risk of losing your domain name in the future. Check your host’s domain registration policy. If there are unnecessary expenses to transfer your domain, try to register it yourself instead. Registering a domain is a very simple and straightforward affair. Some good registrars to try are Enom (http://www.enom.com/) and GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com).
Finally, when you do find the best available domain, get it immediately. Any delays no matter how minor may cost you. Finding the right domain is not easy. It takes a lot of brainstorming, patience and creativity. Once you find it, don’t let it slip.

"Okay ill try my best to describe and inform you on the how to's of selling and buying domains.

Admins and mods: If you dont allow the exchange of links in this guide you have permission to remove them but i have added as the new members might benefit from it.

First Step:

Picking a domain:

As you are new to it it would be a good idea to search through www.dhchat.comwww.namepros.com and www.dnforum.com for more infomation on whats selling for the most and what people are looking for.
Mostly generic domains either one word ( all taken ) and two words using well used keywords like poker, casino, domains ect.
Almost all of these names are registered unless you get when they drop ( after the expiriation date and the owner doesnt renew they go back onto the ''system'' to be resold this is where most people get there names as some allready have traffic from existing sites.
I have resently seen alot of people looking for made up but brandable names like google, yahoo this is a easy but not as profitable way most will sell for mid xx to low xxx but you really dont need any experiance to start off.

Buying A Domain:

Buying a name is done by going to www.godaddy.com ( this is what i use there are many about ) and typing in the domain you wish to purchase in the right field ( will have a pull down box with different tld's eg .com .net .org.
Then you will go to a new screen where if availible it will have a tick next to it in this registrars case in black if not availible it will be in red and either have click here to backorder which at this stage you shouldnt worry about.
Here is an example go to www.godaddy.com and in the field ( center of screen ) type in pludo you will see that it is in red and unavailible to be registered not go to the bottom and search again now type in SOCCERISTHEBEST you will see that it is in black and availible to register ( not avisable todo so though ).
You will then be taken to another screen where it will ask for details you will have to register and give your details you will recieve a e-mail activate it and then proceed with your order, buy thename for 1 year as you are likely to sell and the buyer if wanted will have to renew the domain not you ( saving you a few dollars which is quite alot when starting off.
If you allready own a paypal account you wont have to sign up for one but if not go through at www.paypal.com and make youself one as you will have to use alot whilst buying and selling, You then pay for the name which is quite easy just read the step by step guide located on the site.
After this you will return to godaddy and you will have recieved your name check your e-mail you will recieve a order comformation and 3-4 e-mails after that which you dont need to keep.
You can then access your account via the control panel.

Ins And Outs Of Your Domains:

When in your account you will see alot of buttons at the top of your screen like manage contacts, set nameservers, set locking.
You will not have to go to manage contacts at all unless you need to change the details of your account eg if you move house change phone numbers.
Set Nameserver: Nameservers are the hosting servers names which unless using for a site you wont need if you are you will need to ask your host for the required names they should look something like ns1.yourhostingaccount.com and ns2.yourhostingaccount.com.
Set Locking: this is used to stop people changing your domains into there account
even when you dont allow them to this uasually happens to valueble names but its always good to be safe try locking your domains at all times, it only takes a few seconds to unlock them.
Change Account: This is used when you sell a domain you will be taken to a field where you enter the buyers contact details none are needed to be correct apart from there e-mail as the buyer can change there name, adress and so forth as they might want to keep the confodential.
You then select transfer account and the process is done on your behalf the buyer will recieve an e-mail saying that you have sent they follow the directions and it is now theres.

Selling A Domain:

This is the hardest part and the most time consuming then all the other partstogether you will need to find a person who is looking for the domain you own either to resell or to add a site to it.
This is usally done via www.dhchat.com www.namepros.com www.dnforum.com and www.sedo.com.
You will have to register and post either in the domains for sale forum or search through the wanted ads and pick a user requiring a name you own.
After this you just have to wait and see if there is anyone wanting you name, better names usually sell quicker depending on price.
Parking a domain is a vital step in selling and recieving a small income from them this is done by going to www.sedo.com or www.domainsponsor.com signing up and following the steps, you will have to change the nameservers at your registrar and within a few hours you will be recieving an update on traffic and revenue from each of the domains.

Pricing Your Name:

As a new user you will probably have no idea what you names worth you can, go to the mentioned sites above and post the name in the appraisal section and ask for more knowlegable members to give you there thoughts on the value or you can make a post asking for offers.

Payments:

After you have found a buyer you will have to come to an arrangement on payment method the most used is paypal, quick, easy and well used money transfering programm.
Most sales work by the buyer sending the money then the seller sends the domain asap, this can change but as stated it will be arranged by both the seller and buyer.
If you have any more problems you can contact another member most of which will help you without a problem but i cannot speak for everyone.
If sale is more then $500 some people will ask for payment through escrow.com which is more secure but more expensive in fee's that need to be paid, most split it 50/50 but arrange it so it suits you and your buyer the best.

Scams:

This market is ( how do i put it ) full of them you will recieve e-mails asking to buy your domain which at this point cant be distinguished between a interested buyer or someone wanting your money.
Reply but at any stage they ask for an appraisal from a selected registrar, more times then not they will ask for an appraisal then never get back to you after research you will find they own the appraisal service.
If you are unsure post on the forums members will help you out.

Tips And Tricks:

This is what most people who come into this industry are looking for so here are some tips.

. Always sell your names for more then you paid for unless they are useless and you want to get rid of.

. Only buy names that you feel have some sort of market as above poker, casino, domain and brandable names will usually sell but dont just buy names in this catagory.

. When selling or buying be nice, quick, and reliable dont make a bad name for yourself as alot of people will be hesitant to deal with you in the future pretty much killing off your run with domains straight away.

. Read as much as you can you will learn alot every day browsing forums and making posts asking for infomation if your stuck.

. Sometimes spending money is how you make money but not always you will however lose sometimes but think beforeyou buy you want to have more income then outcome remember.

. Buying domains with traffic will sell for more then thoughs without if you are using google or any other search engine and there is a pop up saying this site could not be found jot the name down and if availible register it, if you found this site more then likely others will to and you will recieve hits without any advertising most people will buy this for a nice sum of money depending on the amount.

. When using godaddy you can use the coupon usa6 which will get you $1 of your order doesnt sound like much but over time it will be worth it.
I think mostly everthing you need to know has been added but if not please use the forums mentioned and ask for more advice.

I will also update this guide regulary adding new things.

Tip #6: If you need to use abbreviations, use only those that made sense and/or easy to remember. For example, instead of using www.instituteofmentalhealth.com, it might be easier to use www.imh.com.

Tip #7: Avoid using hyphenated domain names. The advantage of hyphenated domain names is that it is easier to spot when printed. For example: www.institute-of-mental-health.com is easier to read as compared to www.instituteofmentalhealth.com. The downside is when the domain name is communicated verbally. It is such a pain.

Tip #8: Avoid using "to" or "for" in your domain name. It can be confusing as your visitors may type "2" or "4" instead.

Tip #9: Avoid using numbers in your domain name. Similar to Tip #6, your visitors may type in the number in full instead of using the numeric key.

Registering a domain name is a pretty straight forward process. In fact the hardest part of registering a domain name is coming up with a name that has not already been registered. There are some people who have never registered a domain name, they have left it up to a third party or have always used free hosting. Here is simple explanation of how to register a domain.

The first thing you need to come up with is the name itself, this believe it or not is the hardest part. As there have been so many domain names registered there are not many choices left for keywords to use in your domain name. There are two routes you can go down for choosing your name, using keywords or thinking up your very own word.

Which ever route you choose you are going to need several ideas for a name so jot lots of ideas on a piece of paper first. Write down a list of keywords that you can use in any combination or come up with a list of your own made up words. I chose NameSearchDomain for my site but only because most other combinations of the words that I wanted to use had already been taken. You could of course try making up your own word such as Google, it's both catchy and memorable.

Once you have a list of possible names you will need to find out if they are available. To do this you will need to visit a domain name registrar. I use Godaddy but I would not recommend them to a first time user as they offer too many extras which could easily catch out a newbie during registration. I would suggest you check out a few forums such as DN forum for recommendations, visit a few sites and see which you feel comfortable with. For dot com names look to pay around ten dollars.

Having found a domain name registrar then you need to go through your list of names to see if they are available. To do this just type the name into the search box and select an extension, it is usually best to use .com because of it's popularity. If a domain name you have chosen is available for registration then you will be given the option to register it. All you need to do now is follow the on screen instructions and the brand new domain is yours.

Once you have registered a new name you will need to point it towards your web space, this is presuming you are purchasing the name to create your own site. To do this you will have to provide some DNS information, you can get this from your web host. You should have two addresses, probably both starting with NS, probably NS1 and NS2, you need to add this information into your domain name registration account under Domain name servers. You will usually need two, a primary server and a secondary server. This will take a while to propagate through the internet servers, usually anywhere up to 72 hours. Once the DNS information has propagated then you will be able to type in your domain name in a web browser and arrive at your web site.

This is pretty much an overview on what you need for domain name registration. It should provide you with a grounding for being able to register your own domain. An important word of advice before you register your domain, all sales are final, that means once you have purchased a domain name there is no refund. A final tip, the longer you register as domain for the more discount you usually get. I would advise only registering for a minimum of 1 year initially in case you get cold feet later, you don't want to be stuck with a useless domain name for 10 years.

Whois information is another thing to get knowledgeable about. Whois refers to the owner of the domain name. This information is provided by you when you register a domain name. It is not advisable to falsify domain name information. At the same time, you may use the most generic information you can when entering your domain. If you have a work address and home address, use the work address. If you have a post office box number and a street address, include the post office box number only.

How many years should you consider registering your domain name? I would argue that it depends what you are going to use the domain for. If it is your business name and you intend to be in business for at least the next five years, I would register it for five years. That way, you don't have to worry about it for a long time. In fact, you can register domain names for up to ten years. If you register your domain for that long, you won't have to worry about it for a decade. Maintenance and stress free.

Make sure you lock your domain. After you've registered your domain name, log into the control panel for your domain name and confirm that it is locked. What does locking do for you? If you have or are about to purchase a domain name, YOU could be in trouble and you don't even know it yet...

See, what the domain sellers won't tell you is that the domain name you are purchasing or have purchased can possibly infringe on trademark rights and you can lose that domain name or even worse.

Trademark and servicemark laws apply not only off-line but on-line as well and they even apply to domain names.

Now, a trademark generally applies to goods where as a servicemark applies to services. For the purpose of this article I will refer to trademarks as the same rules apply.

A trademark can be a word, name, symbol, or device and it is used to distinguish and indentify the goods and services from one person or company from that of another.

The purpose of a trademark is to prevent confusion in the eyes of the consumer relating to particular goods and services. Basically, they are in place to prevent unfair competition.

So with that said, just because you purchased a particular domain name it does not necessarily mean you have exclusive rights to it.

If there is a trademark in your domain name, the mark owner has a legal right to send you a "cease and desist" letter and possibly take that domain name away from you.

If you don't believe a word I've said so far then I offer myself as proof because it happened to me. I recently lost one of my domain names under this exact same circumstance.

For legal reasons I can't tell you the domain name as I agreed to make no further references to it, but there were two words in my domain name that were associated with a trademark.

Now, I wasn't aware of this when I purchased the domain name. And I definitely wasn't aware of trademark laws.

Don't be ignorant on the subject like I was. You can avoid any potential problems by educating yourself and thereby preventing the samething from happening to you.

Don't make the same mistake that I did!

Do your research before you buy a domain name and make sure there is NO trademark associated with that name.

There are trademark search engines where you can type in a word or a phrase and it will tell you if it is a trademark.

Now, in my case I chose not to fight the trademark dispute and gave up my domain name voluntarily. I felt it just wasn't worth the time, money and headaches to launch a fight over this.

If this should ever happen to you, you do have rights and there are proper channels to go through to settle the dispute. Contact a lawyer who specializes in this field.

And don't even think for one minute that this sort of thing can't happen to you. Trust me. If you have a trademark in your domain name it is only a matter of time before you get that letter in the mail like I did.

There are numerous cases all over the internet concerning disputes over trademark and domain names.

Since Microsoft is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation, you'd be in violation of the trademark laws. You'd get totally screwed if you tried that. On the other hand, if you notice a company's domain where the name isn't trademarked, go for it

Try and not be a jack of all trades when it comes to domains unless you have incredibly deep pockets to begin with. Try focusing instead on a few areas. Ones you can learn about inside and out. This makes it easier to get SOME kind of momentum going, to maximize sales opportunities, to maximize monetization possibilities, to be able to spot good deals on the acquisition side, to be able to purchase domains at a fair price that you can make an immediate profit on because you know how to best monetize or you have the benefit of volume."

I used to have "david" for godaddy, and that would take $1 dollar off, then expired, now the current code for godaddy is "USA6" and that will save you one dollar per order, so order one domain per order to get for $7.95+$0.25 = $8.20 and Namecheap has the code "SAVE7993" and you get domains for $7.99+$0.25.

Can anyone share a BETTER coupon with me/us? I am only looking for ONE more dollar off, I have $1 dollar off coupons but I know a few people that have told me they have used $2 off coupon and the one I had expired.

Replies are MUCH appreciated, that extra dollar off will REALLY help when you think about dozens of domains, were' talking about saving $30 bucks.

Uses

The most basic use of DNS is to translate hostnames to IP addresses. It is in very simple terms like a phone book. For example, if you want to know the internet address of en.wikipedia.org, the Domain Name System can be used to tell you it is 145.97.39.155. DNS also has other important uses.

Preeminently, DNS makes it possible to assign Internet destinations to the human organization or concern they represent, independently of the physical routing hierarchy represented by the numerical IP address. "I've seen a few threads and posts in this forum where people have asked where to get hosting from, so I thought I'd make this sticky. If you have any recommendations or anti-recommendations as to who to go to (or not go to as the case may be) then this is the place to post about it.

I'll start the ball rolling with an anti-recomendation, my current host is www.web-hosting.uk.com and they are ... not a good host. Quite often any pages that use ASP (which is pretty much my entire site) will simply stop working and no content will be sent to the browser. All normal .html pages will continue to be sent fine, I'm not sure if PHP pages still work during these "outages" as I've never had any to test. However, they are a pretty cheap UK based host and use the easy to get around helm CMS for their admin panel, so if you're just starting out and don't use a server-side language, they might be worth considering."

I registed a domain name with yahoo. I paid for 5 years.

After sometime, I bought a hosting plan from yahoo. Since I didn't like the hosting plan, I cancelled the plan.

Know what, yahoo cancelled my domain name also! I lost a domain name for which I had paid for 5 years.

Talked, Shouted, Cried - with yahoo support people! No use! Domain name remained cancelled! I had to pay again to get back the domain.

(Their stupid logic: They call a hosting plan as an upgrade of the domain plan. When you buy hosting, you upgrade domain name. So when you cancel hosting plan later, according to them, you cancel not only the hosting plan, but also the domain name associated with it)

Didn't expect such an idotic logic from a company like Yahoo."
